Common Sweetener May Damage Critical Brain Barrier, Raising Stroke Risk

Erythritol, a popular low-calorie sweetener found in products ranging from protein bars to energy drinks, has long been considered a safe alternative to sugar. However, emerging research suggests it may pose previously unrecognized risks to cardiovascular and brain health.

A recent study from the University of Colorado indicates that erythritol may damage cells of the blood–brain barrier, a vital protective system that shields the brain from harmful substances while allowing essential nutrients to pass through.

These findings add new mechanistic insight to earlier observational studies that have linked erythritol consumption with increased rates of heart attack and stroke.
