Common Sweetener May Damage Critical Brain Barrier, Raising Stroke Risk

How Erythritol May Affect the Brain

In the study, researchers exposed blood–brain barrier cells to erythritol concentrations similar to those observed after consuming a sweetened soft drink. The results showed a cascade of cellular damage that could leave the brain more vulnerable to blood clots—a leading cause of ischemic stroke.

Erythritol induced oxidative stress, increasing levels of harmful free radicals while simultaneously suppressing the cells’ natural antioxidant defenses. This dual effect impaired normal cellular function and, in some cases, led to cell death.
