How Scabies Spreads
Scabies spreads primarily through prolonged, close skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Common situations that increase risk include:
- Sharing a bed
- Frequent hugging or close physical contact
- Living in crowded or shared spaces
Less commonly, scabies can spread through clothing, towels, or bedding that have been in direct contact with affected skin.
When scabies is confirmed in a household, treating only the person with visible symptoms is usually not enough. Healthcare professionals often recommend that all household members follow treatment instructions simultaneously to prevent the mites from continuing to circulate.
