What Scabies Really Is — and What It Isn’t

Scabies, medically known as scabiosis, is far more common than many people realize. A widespread misconception is that it results from poor hygiene. In reality, scabies can affect anyone—regardless of cleanliness, age, or lifestyle.

The condition is caused by a microscopic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. This tiny organism belongs to the arachnid family and lives on the surface of human skin. Scabies has nothing to do with dirt or lack of washing; it spreads through contact, not unclean environments.
