Allergy or Scabies? How to Tell the Difference—and Why It Matters

Why the Itching Gets Worse at Night

One of the most recognizable symptoms of scabies is intense itching, which often becomes much worse at night. Many people notice that discomfort peaks once they lie down to rest.

Several factors may contribute to this:

  • Natural increases in body temperature at night
  • Warm bedding that creates an ideal environment for irritation
  • Fewer distractions, making the sensation more noticeable

The real cause lies in the mite’s behavior. After contacting human skin, the female mite burrows tiny tunnels into the outermost layer. As it moves, it lays eggs and leaves behind waste products. These substances trigger the body’s immune response, which is what causes the itching—not the mite’s movement itself.
