At first glance, it looks like a small piece of uninteresting moss. The younger ones look at him with perplexity, wondering what he could be used for. And yet, this discreet object has long been an essential part of women’s daily life. A silent ally, slipped into the shoes, which made entire days perched on heels bearable. Let’s take a look back at this forgotten accessory for heels that many have left aside… but which has lost none of its usefulness.

A small accessory with an essential role

The high-heeled sole, also known as the heel pad, was a thin foam or gel protector that was placed on the back of the shoe. His goal? Improve comfort, limit friction and avoid those small inconveniences that spoil a day: warming up, feelings of discomfort or tired feet. 

At a time when wearing heels was a daily occurrence, this accessory was almost as essential as a handbag. Invisible once in place, but frighteningly effective.
