But the turning point came three weeks before Christmas.

I had come home early from a site visit. The house was quiet. I walked into the kitchen and heard Spencer's voice coming from the conservatory. He was on the phone, his voice relaxed and confident—a tone he hadn't used with me in over a year.

"Don't worry, Mom," he said. "I know. I'll handle it. I'm not going to let it drag on into next fiscal year. She's just a burden right now. I'm going to finish this before New Year's so it stays tidy. It'll be my Christmas present to myself."

He laughed. It was a cold, dismissive sound.

"Yes, I have the paperwork ready. I'm just waiting for the right moment. Maybe during Christmas dinner. Dad thinks it's a bold move to do it in front of everyone. Then he'll put her in her place."
