spice
health
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which in turn consists of several molecules that are incompatible with the molecules of certain medications. This makes this spice very dangerous for some people who are undergoing medical treatment.
Blood thinners
Turmeric is a powerful blood thinner due to its antithrombotic properties. Taking aspirin, clopidogrel or warfarin would only increase the effect. This would have the opposite effect of the intended effect and even serious consequences such as bleeding.
Turmeric is also known for its digestive properties, as it increases stomach acid levels. Therefore, it is not necessary to take turmeric if you are taking medications that lower stomach acid. Otherwise, nausea, flatulence and stomach pain as well as pain in the esophagus can result. Therefore, ban turmeric from your kitchen if you are taking omeprazole, ranitidine (Zantak), cimetidine (Tagamet), or famotidine (Pepcid).
Antidiabetic
Turmeric should be avoided at all costs when taking diabetes medications, as the spice significantly increases the effects of these medications, which can lead to hypoglycemia, blurred vision, hallucinations, or in the best case, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and chills.
Turmeric can be an allergen. For those prone to turmeric allergies, which manifest as fatigue, shortness of breath, anaphylaxis, or hives or rashes, it goes without saying that turmeric shouldn't even be on the kitchen shelf.
Therefore, it is advisable, even essential, to stop consuming this spice if you are prone to these ailments, even if you like spicy Indian dishes and oriental tagines. A consultation with a doctor is always necessary, especially in the case of medical treatment.
