The difficulties extended beyond finances. When she walked down the street with her children, strangers stared. Some neighbors whispered. Certain landlords refused to rent to her, believing she would not “fit in.” More than once, she was forced to look for housing again simply because her family did not match expectations.
Still, she stayed steady. Every evening, no matter how exhausted she felt, she tucked her children into bed and reminded them of the values that would guide their lives.
“We may not have much,” she told them, “but we have honesty. We have dignity. And we have one another.”
