She had accompanied them quietly that evening.
Without hesitation, she knelt down and wiped Sophie’s tears with the edge of her apron.
“Sweetheart,” Anna whispered gently, “you don’t need ice cream to be special. You’re already the brightest star here.”
Sophie sniffled.
“But they said I don’t have a mommy.”

“You do have one,” she said softly.
“She’s watching you from heaven. And until then… I’ll stand right beside you.”
