The iPhone Volume Buttons Hide More Powerful Features Than You Think
5. Forcing a Restart When Your Phone Freezes
If your iPhone becomes unresponsive, the volume buttons can help bring it back to life. To force a restart, press the volume up button, then the volume down button, and finally hold the side button. This hardware-based reset can resolve freezes and glitches when a standard restart doesn’t work.

6. Temporarily Turning Off Face ID or Touch ID
There are moments when added security is necessary—such as when handing your phone to someone else or entering a sensitive environment. Holding the side button together with either volume button for about two seconds temporarily disables Face ID or Touch ID. This ensures the device requires a passcode, giving you greater control over your privacy.
Muting Calls Instantly and Discreetly
When you’re in a meeting or otherwise occupied, silencing incoming calls quickly can be essential. Pressing either volume button will mute an incoming call or FaceTime ring. In silent mode, this action also stops vibrations, allowing you to handle interruptions quietly and discreetly.
