The doctor spoke:
“I think—” They should talk in private.
The door closed.
There were only three of us left.
I looked directly at my mother-in-law:
“Whose baby is this?”
A question that even I didn’t want to hear.
She was trembling.
“I… I didn’t want this to happen…”
“But it happened.”
I watched Alejandro:
“You know, don’t you?”
He closed his eyes.
And he said a sentence…
It destroyed my world.
“The baby… It belongs to my father.”
I was out of breath.
“What?” But he died two years ago!
“Yes,” he said in a hoarse voice, “but before he died—” He did something that no one knew about…
My mother-in-law burst into tears.
“Your stepfather… before he died… he saved his sperm… I wanted to have another child… but I didn’t accept it at that time…”
I moved away.
“You mean… Artificial insemination?”
She nodded her head, crying:
“After his death—” I couldn’t bear the loneliness… and I did it… without telling anyone…
I had the impression that everything was spinning.
“You’re pregnant… by your husband… after his death?”
“I know it’s wrong… but I…”
“Not only is it wrong,” I interrupted her, “it’s crazy.
I watched Alejandro:
“So why are you in charge?”
He held my gaze.
“Because…” I signed the consent form.
I was shocked.
” What ? “
“Mom needed a parent… and I was the only one who knew…”
“So you hid it from me?”
“I didn’t want you to get hurt…”
“And what about me?” I have no right to know!
I screamed.
Everything exploded inside me.
Then Alejandro said something that took my breath away.
” And you ? “
I stopped.
“What do you mean?”
He stared at me.
“You’re hiding something from me too, aren’t you?”
My heart stopped.
“You… You know that?”
He smiled bitterly.
—I have seen your results in the hospital system.
I moved away.
“Were you looking at me?”
“No… it was a coincidence… When I came with Mom.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Suffocating.
“You’re pregnant—aren’t you?”
I didn’t reply.
But my tears did it.
Three people.
Three secrets.
Three shots.
My mother-in-law, pregnant by the man who died.
