Then Mr. Thompson paused. He cleared his throat, a deliberate and serious gesture.
“There is one final clause in Mr. Richard’s will,” he said, “which pertains to his spouse, should she survive him.”
My pulse quickened. Could this be… me?
He continued, reading the exact wording aloud:
