Directions
-
Inflate the balloons to your desired lantern size and tie them securely.
-
Cover each balloon with plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
-
In a bowl, mix equal parts fabric stiffener or white glue and water to create a thin paste.
-
Submerge a lace doily in the mixture, ensuring it is fully saturated.
-
Carefully drape the doily over the balloon, smoothing out wrinkles so it conforms to the shape.
-
Use clothespins or clips to hold the doily in place if needed.
-
Repeat with additional doilies, slightly overlapping them to cover the entire balloon.
-
Allow the doilies to dry completely (24–48 hours, depending on humidity).
-
Once fully dry, gently pop the balloon and remove it, leaving the hardened lace shell.
-
Trim any excess edges with scissors for a clean finish.
-
Place an LED tea light or fairy lights inside the lantern.
-
Hang the lantern using string or twine, or display it on a flat surface.
Variations & Tips
