I soaked my berries in salt water and saw these white wiggling things come out. Should I just throw them away?

### 2. Should you throw the berries away?

**Not necessarily.** You can follow this rule:

* **If the fruit is firm and smells fresh:** Do not throw them away. Simply rinse the berries thoroughly with plain water after the salt soak to remove the larvae and the salt. They are perfectly fine for eating or smoothies.

* **If the fruit is very mushy or smells sour:** In this case, it is better to discard them, as the larvae have started to damage the fruit or bacteria have begun to ferment it.

### 3. Tips for the future:

* **Immediate Refrigeration:** Put your berries in the fridge as soon as you buy or pick them; the cold stops the eggs from hatching and prevents the larvae from growing.

* **Salt Water Soak:** Continue using the salt water soak (about 1 tablespoon of salt per 2 cups of water) for 10–15 minutes if you want to ensure they are removed before eating.

In short: if the berries look fresh, just wash them well and enjoy them—there is no need to worry!
