A woman is ordered to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for 30 people at 4 a.m.: her husband tells her "Do it perfectly this time" - Her response at 3 a.m. changes everything.

My mother-in-law told me to get up at 4:00 a.m. to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for her 30 guests. My husband added, "This time, don't forget to make sure everything is absolutely perfect!" I smiled and replied, "Of course."

At 3:00 a.m., I packed my suitcase for the airport.

The gate agent's voice crackled over the airport loudspeakers at 3:17 a.m.: "Last call for boarding on flight 442 to Maui."

I clutched my boarding pass in trembling fingers, the paper already damp with sweat and tears.

Behind me, somewhere in our suburban home forty minutes away, thirty place settings remained empty on the dining room table I had spent three hours setting the day before.

The turkey I should have started preparing an hour ago was still frozen in the refrigerator, just as my heart had been for the past five years.

My phone vibrated: another message from Hudson. “Hope you’re already cooking, honey. Mom’s already texting me what time I’m going to make dinner.”

I turned it off and boarded the plane, leaving behind much more than just a Thanksgiving dinner.

I was abandoning a life that had slowly suffocated me, a helpful suggestion and a dismissive comment all at once.
