Most travelers quickly scan the bathroom, test the locks, and glance around the room, but one spot is frequently ignored: the space beneath the bed. A practical tip shared by a veteran flight attendant from KLM highlights why this area deserves attention—and how to check it quickly without putting yourself at risk.

The method is surprisingly simple. As soon as you enter the room, toss or roll a water bottle firmly under the bed from one side to the other. If the bottle moves freely, the space is likely clear. If it stops abruptly or doesn’t roll all the way through, it could indicate an object underneath. This quick test allows you to identify anything unusual from a safe distance, giving you the option to step out and notify hotel staff if needed.
