The engineer recommends cleaning pillows at least twice a year to prevent the build-up of mold, dust mites, and various microorganisms. On his website, he also mentions another effective combination: sodium percarbonate and concentrated acetic acid, or industrial vinegar, which he says is “the perfect combination for any household cleaning.”
Sodium percarbonate is a chemical compound most commonly used as an environmentally friendly cleaning and bleaching agent. It comes in the form of a white powder and releases oxygen when dissolved in water, making it an effective stain remover and disinfectant.
When dissolved in water, sodium percarbonate breaks down into two substances: sodium carbonate, known as washing soda, and hydrogen peroxide, which has a mild disinfectant effect.
Hydrogen peroxide releases active oxygen, which breaks down stains, bacteria and unpleasant odors.
Sodium percarbonate is most commonly used for the following purposes: as a bleach and stain remover for washing clothes, for cleaning greasy surfaces and burnt-on dishes in the kitchen, for removing grout, mold and deposits in the bathroom, for soaking heavily soiled textiles, and for cleaning patios, wooden surfaces and tiles.
