A chemical engineer explains the process: “If your pillows have yellow stains, I’ll tell you how to wash them in a washing machine”

Every day, pillows accumulate bacteria and moisture, which over time become visible in the form of yellowish stains. These stains are a concern for many people. Chemical engineer Diego Fernández explained how they can be cleaned effectively without damaging the pillow and how to extend its lifespan. He also explained in detail what to do when these stains appear.

According to Fernández, not all washing machines are suitable for this task. In one of his videos, he warns that washing machines with a central agitator can easily deform or even ruin pillows. A safer option is a front-loading or top-loading washing machine without an agitator.

“If your pillows look like this, with yellow stains or even mold, I’ll show you how to wash them, both in the washing machine and by hand,” says Fernández.

He says it’s a good idea to pre-treat before washing. The pillows should be soaked in hot water with sodium percarbonate for an hour. This substance, which Fernández calls “a surprisingly effective cleaner and disinfectant,” works as a bleach, disinfectant, and deodorizer all at once. It’s also biodegradable and non-toxic.

For those who don’t want to wash their pillows in the washing machine, the expert also recommends hand cleaning. To do this, prepare a solution of warm water with liquid detergent or dishwashing liquid, then rub the surface with a cloth. Then apply hydrogen peroxide using a spray bottle. If the stains do not disappear completely, the process can be repeated. As he says in his own presentation: “This is what my pillows looked like after cleaning. They were not damaged or deformed.”
